Caring for a Saluki

Cardiac issues, including heart murmurs and mitral valve disease, are known to occur in the breed. Some Salukis may develop hypothyroidism, which affects the thyroid gland and metabolism. Additionally, hemangiosarcoma, a type of cancer of the blood vessels, is seen more frequently in Salukis than in some other breeds. Eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts can also appear.

Choose a high-quality puppy food appropriate for large breeds. These formulas provide controlled levels of calcium and phosphorus to support proper bone development without causing growth abnormalities. Feed three measured meals per day from weaning until about six months of age, then reduce to two meals per day. Salukis are naturally lean and slender dogs, and they should never appear overweight. You should be able to easily see the last two or three ribs and feel all ribs with very little fat covering. However, a growing puppy should not look emaciated either.

Salukis have minimal grooming requirements; to keep their smooth, low-shedding coat, they need to be brushed once a week with a soft brush or mitt. To avoid tangles, more care should be used with the feathered parts (legs, tail, and ears). They are odorless, clean canines who only require sporadic baths.

This breed is intelligent, sensitive, and independent, with a strong hunting instinct that is deeply ingrained. They are not as eager to please as some other breeds, so you will need patience and consistency.
Socialisation is absolutely essential for a Saluki puppy. Introduce them calmly to many different people, quiet children, other dogs, and various environments before they reach four months of age. Without proper socialisation, a Saluki can become timid or overly nervous.

The Saluki is a graceful, slender, and elegant breed that originated in the Middle East. It is one of the oldest known dog breeds, with historical records and artworks dating back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The breed was traditionally used by nomadic tribes for coursing gazelles and other fast game across vast desert plains. In terms of size category, the Saluki falls into theย largeย range. An adult typically stands between 23 and 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 35 and 65 pounds, with males being noticeably larger than females. As a puppy, Salukis are born very small and delicate-looking. They grow slowly compared to other large breeds, often taking up to eighteen months to two years to reach their full adult height and weight.
