OES are predisposed to hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, autoimmune thyroiditis, and hereditary deafness (often linked to light coat pigmentation). Cerebellar ataxia, a neurological condition affecting coordination, also occurs in the breed.

The Old English Sheepdog ("Bobtail") was developed in southwestern England in the early 19th century to drive cattle and sheep to market — the breed's traditional docked tail marked its status as a working farm dog, exempt from the taxes levied on non-working dogs at the time. The AKC recognized the breed in 1888.
Known for a distinctive shaggy grey-and-white coat and a rolling, bear-like gait, OES are also famous for a clownish, easygoing personality — a breed that historically worked independently for long stretches and today makes an adaptable, affectionate family companion.
