Caring for a Beagle

Some common growth-related concerns for Beagles include:
Obesity – a major concern that can develop quickly with poor diet control.
Hip dysplasia – while less common than in large breeds, it can still occur.
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) – linked to excessive weight or poor movement habits.
Ear infections – due to floppy ears, though not related to growth, it’s worth monitoring.
Keeping a regular growth chart and checking in with your vet every few months can help ensure your Beagle puppy is developing at a healthy pace.

Feed a high-quality puppy formula for small or medium-sized breeds until they are 12 months old.
Puppies under 6 months should be fed three times a day, then reduced to two meals daily after 6 months.
Beagles love food—so avoid overfeeding and stick to portion recommendations.

Beagles require weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or tool to remove stray fur, but they are low-maintenance animals who shed modestly throughout the year. To avoid infections in their floppy ears, they require frequent, gentle ear cleanings, nail trims every five to six weeks, and monthly baths with PH-balanced shampoo.

Beagle puppies require moderate daily activity, such as short walks, fetch, and mental stimulation (scent-based games are particularly effective).
Avoid long or intense runs until their joints are mature (around 1 year).

About The Beagle

The Beagle is a small, sturdy, and energetic scent hound that originated in England. The breed’s history can be traced back to Roman times, but the modern Beagle was developed in Great Britain during the 1830s, primarily for hunting hares—a practice known as beagling. The name “Beagle” may come from the French word begueule, meaning “open throat” or “loud mouth,” which refers to their distinctive baying bark. In terms of size category, the Beagle falls into the small to medium range. There are two varieties: those standing under 13 inches at the shoulder, and those standing between 13 and 15 inches. Adults typically weigh between 9 and 11 kilograms (20 to 30 pounds). As a puppy, Beagles are born small and round, growing steadily. They generally reach their full adult height by approximately eight to ten months of age, though they may continue to fill out until around eighteen months.
