Basenjis are predisposed to Fanconi syndrome, a hereditary kidney disorder specific enough to this breed that roughly 75% of all reported canine Fanconi cases occur in Basenjis — typically presenting between ages 4-8, and a DNA test can identify carriers before breeding. The breed is also prone to progressive retinal atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency, a hereditary form of hemolytic anemia.
