Caring for a Akita

Growth-related issues to monitor include:

Hip dysplasia
Autoimmune disorders
Bloat (gastric torsion)

Akita puppies need a high-quality, large-breed puppy formula to support their rapid but controlled growth. Their diet requires high-quality animal proteins, carefully balanced calcium and phosphorus, and omega-3 fatty acids to ensure proper muscle, bone, and joint development without growing too quickly.

Akitas have a dense double coat that requires intense grooming, called "coat blowing" especially during bi-annual (shedding) seasons, when daily brushing with an undercoat rake is necessary. Routine care involves weekly brushing, monthly baths, and regular nail trims.

While Akita puppies are active, their growing joints need protection. Avoid intense activities like long runs or jumping from heights during the first year. Opt for structured walks, short play sessions, and mental stimulation to burn energy safely.

About the Akita

The Akita is a large and powerful dog breed that originated in the mountainous regions of northern Japan. Historically, these dogs were used by the Matagi (traditional hunters) for guarding and hunting large game, including bears. During the Edo period (1603–1867), the breed was also used for dog fighting, which led to crossing with larger breeds like Tosas and Mastiffs, significantly increasing its size. After dogfighting was prohibited in 1908, efforts began to preserve and improve the breed as a large Japanese breed, culminating in nine superior Akitas being designated as “Natural Monuments” in 1931. The breed is globally renowned for its loyalty, famously exemplified by the story of Hachikō, who waited for his deceased master at a train station for nine years.
