Caring for a American Bulldog

Health

American Bulldogs are prone to hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia given their muscular build, along with some skin allergies. Deafness is documented in the breed at a modestly elevated rate tied to certain coat colors.

Nutrition

A quality diet in measured portions; this athletic breed benefits from staying lean to protect joints.

Grooming

The short coat needs minimal grooming — an easy-care breed overall.

Training

Early socialization and consistent obedience training matter given the breed's strength and protective instincts.

About the breed

Descended from working farm bulldogs brought to the American South by English immigrants, used historically for guarding property and catching semi-wild livestock — nearly disappeared after World War II before a small number of dedicated breeders rebuilt the population.

Athletic and strong, American Bulldogs combine real working-dog capability with a loyal, protective family temperament.
