Caring for a American Leopard Hound

Health

Limited breed-specific health data exists given how uncommon and recently formalized the breed is; general hound-breed screening (hips, eyes) is a reasonable precaution.

Nutrition

A quality diet matched to this breed's genuinely active, working hunting-dog background.

Grooming

The short, dense coat needs minimal grooming.

Training

A working hunting breed at heart — needs real exercise and a job or outlet, and does best with an owner experienced in hound-type dogs.

About the breed

An American scenthound descended from dogs brought by Spanish conquistadors, later used by settlers to hunt bear and other big game — recognized by the UKC as the Leopard Cur before being renamed in 2008. Not yet a full AKC breed, but included in the AKC's Foundation Stock Service since 2012.

Known for a distinctive leopard-spotted coat and genuine hunting intelligence, this breed barks readily to protect its territory and is a capable tree-climber when working.
