Anatolians are susceptible to certain growth-related health issues:
Hip and elbow dysplasia – a risk in giant breeds, especially if growth is too fast.
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) – a joint disorder that can arise from overfeeding or excessive exercise.
Monitor for signs of limping, joint swelling, or reluctance to move, and consult your veterinarian if any of these signs appear.
Proper nutrition is vital during the puppy’s first 24 months:
Feed a large or giant breed puppy formula to support controlled growth and prevent skeletal problems.
Split meals into three meals/day until six months, then two meals/day afterward.
Avoid overfeeding or excessive calcium intake, which can lead to bone disorders.
The Anatolian, which was bred for outdoor labor, is protected from the weather by a thick undercoat. While most Anatolians have a very short outer coat, some have a lengthy one. A brief brushing once a week will keep it looking nice. However, bear in mind that the Anatolian sheds his undercoat twice a year. He will need to be thoroughly brushed out every few days during shedding season to get rid of the dead hair using a short-bristle brush and maybe a comb as well. The Anatolian should have its nails clipped on a regular basis, just like any other breed.
Moderate, age-appropriate exercise is key:
Avoid intense running or jumping until at least 12–18 months.
Regular walks and gentle play help build muscle without overstressing growing joints.
Avoid long stairs or slippery floors that may risk joint strain.
| The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is an ancient guardian breed originating in Turkey, where it was developed to protect livestock from predators. This breed is known for its independence, loyalty, and strength. It is highly intelligent and protective, making it an exceptional working dog and a loyal, albeit reserved, family companion. The Anatolian is a giant breed, often standing 27–29 inches tall and weighing between 90 and 150 pounds at maturity. Due to its large size, growth tracking is crucial to ensure that bones, joints, and muscles develop healthily. Rapid or uneven growth may predispose the breed to joint issues, such as hip dysplasia, so maintaining proper nutrition and monitoring weight is essential throughout the puppy’s development. |
