The Boxer was developed in late 19th-century Germany by crossing the now-extinct Bullenbeisser — a powerful hunting mastiff used on wild boar — with English Bulldogs, aiming for a more agile dog that kept the Bullenbeisser's strength. The name likely comes from the breed's habit of standing on its hind legs and "boxing" with its front paws during play. The AKC recognized the breed in 1904.
