Caring for a Chihuahua

Common growth-related concerns include hypoglycemia in puppies, especially under 3 months of age, as well as luxating patella and dental overcrowding due to their tiny mouths. Regular vet visits and early intervention are key to ensuring lifelong health.

Chihuahuas require a small-breed puppy formula with calorie-dense nutrition to support their high metabolism and small stomach size. Feed 3โ€“4 small meals per day until 6 months, then transition to 2 meals daily. Avoid free feeding, as Chihuahuas are prone to weight gain and dental issues.

Chihuahuas need weekly brushing (3x a week for long-haired), monthly baths with hydrating shampoo, and frequent nail trims to avoid excessive, unpleasant claws. They require specialist dental care to prevent disease in their small mouths, as well as ear cleaning to avoid infection, particularly in the long-haired kinds.

Short bursts of activity are idealโ€”indoor play, short walks, and safe socialization with other small dogs work well. Avoid overexertion or rough play, especially with larger pets, as Chihuahuas are fragile and can be injured easily.

About the Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a very small, compact, and confident breed that originated in Mexico. It is named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where the modern breed was first discovered and developed in the mid-19th century. The breed is believed to be descended from the Techichi, a small companion dog kept by the ancient Toltec civilization. In terms of size category, the Chihuahua falls into the toy range. Adults typically stand between 15 and 23 centimetres (6 to 9 inches) at the shoulder and weigh between 1.5 and 3 kilograms (3 to 6 pounds). The breed has two coat varieties: smooth coat and long coat. As a puppy, the Chihuahua is extremely tiny at birth, often weighing less than 100 grams (3.5 ounces). They grow slowly and generally reach their full adult size by approximately ten to twelve months of age.
