Caring for a German Longhaired Pointer

German Longhaired Pointers (GLPs) are generally hardy and athletic. However, like many large, deep-chested breeds, they can be susceptible to specific health issues, most notably hip dysplasia, bloat (GDV), and hypothyroidism

Like all other sporting breeds, GLPs require a recommended twice-daily ration of high-quality food. Breed-specific recipes are available from numerous dog food manufacturers for small, medium, big, and extra-large breeds. It's up to you what you feed your dog, but the best approach to figure out how often to feed him as a puppy and what kind of food will make him live longer as an adult is to work with your veterinarian and/or breeder. There should always be fresh, clean water available.

Regular maintenance is necessary for the German Longhair, particularly if he is hunting through dense cover and varied terrain. The bases of his ears are prone to knotting, and his lengthy coat accumulates burs that may need to be trimmed away. He may have abrasions on his whole tail when hunting in dense cover. If not, he will continue to look his best with the occasional bath and brushing. If necessary, a nail clipper or grinder can be used to cut his nails to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. To prevent an accumulation of wax and debris that could lead to an infection, his ears should be examined on a frequent basis. Regular brushing of the teeth is recommended.

German Longhaired Pointers are bright, highly trainable, and eager to please when they are well bred. They require and deserve a lot of care and exercise because they have a lot of energy.

The German Longhaired Pointer is a pointing dog with a full tail, a long coat with dense guard hairs, and a moderate undercoat. Its appearance is similar to that of a Setter from Continental Europe. The GLP’s love of swimming and, thus, waterfowl hunting, is one notable distinction. The combination of markings like a German Shorthaired Pointer is reflected in the color of the coat.

German Longhaired Pointers are expected to search, point, track, and retrieve game because they are gun dogs. They are adept in hunting all kinds of game, including waterfowl, upland game birds, and furred wildlife (mostly squirrels and rabbits in North America) in the forests or grasslands.
