Portuguese Water Dogs are one of roughly a dozen breeds predisposed to Addison's disease, an autoimmune condition where the adrenal glands stop producing adequate hormones — heritability studies in the breed put it around 49%, so it's a real, inherited risk rather than a fluke. They're also prone to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and GM1 storage disease (gangliosidosis), a rare but fatal inherited condition that a DNA test can screen breeding dogs for.

The Portuguese Water Dog was developed along Portugal's Algarve coast, working alongside fishermen since at least the 13th century — herding fish into nets, retrieving lost tackle, and carrying messages between boats and shore. Mechanized fishing nearly wiped the breed out by the mid-20th century, down to fewer than 50 known dogs worldwide, before dedicated preservation breeders rebuilt the population. The AKC recognized the breed in 1983.
Perhaps the breed's most famous modern ambassadors were Bo and Sunny Obama, who lived in the White House — Portuguese Water Dogs are known for a spirited, obedient, highly intelligent temperament shaped by centuries of close teamwork with fishing crews.
