Caring for a Shetland Shepdog

Health

Shelties are prone to Collie Eye Anomaly, an inherited condition that can cause blindness and is usually screened for in puppyhood, along with hip dysplasia and dermatomyositis, a skin and muscle inflammation condition more specific to the breed. Regular ophthalmologic exams are worthwhile even in dogs that seem to be seeing normally.

Nutrition

A quality diet in portions matched to activity level; Shelties do well on standard small/medium-breed formulas.

Grooming

The thick double coat sheds heavily, especially during seasonal blowouts; brushing 2-3 times a week (more during shedding season) prevents matting.

Training

Highly trainable and eager to please — Shelties excel at obedience and agility, and that same trainability makes early work on excessive barking worthwhile given the breed's vocal tendencies.

About the breed

The Shetland Sheepdog ("Sheltie") was developed in Scotland's remote Shetland Islands, where sparse vegetation favored smaller livestock and, in turn, smaller herding dogs than the mainland Collie. Despite looking like a miniature Collie, the Sheltie is a genuinely distinct breed shaped by that isolated environment.

Shelties are known for intense loyalty, high trainability, and a tendency to bark — a trait that made them effective watchdogs on isolated farms and one that new owners should be ready to train early.
