Generally speaking, the Vizsla is a robust and healthy breed. However, like all purebred dogs, they have a few common concerns. Hip dysplasia can appear, so it is wise to ask the breeder for health clearances on the parents. Epilepsy and certain eye conditions are also noted in the breed. For your Vizsla puppy, regular veterinary check-ups are essential. Keep a close eye on their joints during the rapid growth phase; avoid forced running on hard surfaces or repetitive jumping until they are at least twelve to fifteen months old. A well-bred Vizsla often lives twelve to fifteen years.
Choose a high-quality puppy food formulated for medium-sized breeds. These formulas contain the correct ratio of calcium and phosphorus to help prevent skeletal problems. Feed three small meals per day from weaning until about six months of age, then you may reduce to two meals per day. Vizsla puppies are very active and lean by nature, so you should see a visible waistline and feel their ribs easily under a light layer of muscle. Avoid free-feeding or leaving food out all day, as this can lead to bloat. Always provide fresh, clean water.
Their coat is short, dense, and lies flat against the body. A weekly rubdown with a soft grooming mitt or a rubber curry brush removes loose hair and spreads natural oils, giving the coat a lovely shine. Bathing is only necessary once every few months or when the puppy becomes muddy. Do keep the nails trimmed short, as long nails can cause discomfort while the puppy is learning to walk correctly on various surfaces
This breed is exceptionally intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please, so harsh words or rough corrections will only make them fearful and withdrawn. Use short, positive sessions with small treats and plenty of praise. Focus first on house manners: sit, down, come, and walking nicely on a leash. Socialisation is equally important. Introduce your puppy calmly to different people, gentle children, other vaccinated dogs, and everyday sounds like vacuum cleaners or doorbells. Without enough mental stimulation and human company, a Vizsla puppy can become anxious or destructive
The Vizsla is a graceful, medium-sized hunting dog originating from Hungary. Bred originally alongside Magyar hunters, this breed is known for its keen nose, natural pointing ability, and deep attachment to its human family. In terms of size category, the Vizsla falls into the medium range. An adult male typically stands 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder and weighs 55 to 60 pounds; females are slightly smaller. As a puppy, you can expect a fast growth rate, with most of their height achieved by six to eight months, though they continue filling out until around one year of age.
