Irish Setter Breed Profile & Growth Guide
Breed Overview
The Irish Setter is a graceful, high-energy sporting dog known for its elegant red coat and friendly, outgoing personality. Originally bred in Ireland for bird hunting, the Irish Setter developed into an enthusiastic and tireless field companion with an excellent sense of smell. Today, they are just as well-loved for their companionship as they are for their field abilities.
Irish Setters are intelligent, playful, and affectionate with both people and other pets. They thrive on human interaction and require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Their spirited and sometimes mischievous nature makes them a joy to train with patience and positive reinforcement.
Size Category: Large
Irish Setters are classified as a large breed, with adult males typically weighing 65–75 lbs and females 55–65 lbs. Because of their long-legged, athletic build and prolonged adolescence, growth tracking is important to ensure proper skeletal development, prevent joint stress, and maintain a lean, healthy weight throughout the puppy stage.

How Much Bigger Will My Irish Setter Puppy Get?
Irish Setters grow rapidly during their first year, though they maintain a lean frame throughout puppyhood. Here’s what to expect:
- 50% of adult weight by 4–5 months
- 75% of adult weight by 6–7 months
- Full adult weight by 18 months, with height reached closer to 12 months
Rule of thumb:
To estimate adult weight, double your puppy’s weight at 16 weeks.
Exceptions:
While Irish Setters usually reach adult height by 12 months, their chest and muscle mass continue to fill out until around 18 months, sometimes even up to 2 years. Overweight or underweight puppies may deviate from standard growth curves and should be assessed by a vet.

Irish Setter Growth Tips
Nutrition
- Feeding Schedule: Feed 3 meals daily until 6 months, then reduce to 2 meals.
- Use a large-breed puppy formula to support steady growth and joint health. Proper calcium-to-phosphorus ratios are essential to avoid skeletal issues.
- Maintain a lean body condition—excess weight can stress developing joints.
Exercise
- Irish Setter puppies have high energy, but growth plates are still developing. Avoid long runs, forced jogging, or high-impact activities until at least 12–18 months old.
- Opt for safe play sessions, off-leash time in fenced areas, and mental enrichment games.
- Begin basic obedience early—Irish Setters are trainable, but can be distracted easily.
Health Watch
- Hip and elbow dysplasia are concerns in larger breeds—nutrition and weight management are key.
- Panosteitis (growing pains): This condition can cause temporary lameness in dogs between 5 and 12 months of age.
- Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus): Feed two smaller meals per day, use a slow feeder, and avoid vigorous activity after meals.
