Keeshond Breed Profile & Growth Guide
Breed Overview
The Keeshond (pronounced “KAYZ-hawnd”) is a medium-sized spitz-type breed originally developed in the Netherlands as a companion and watchdog on riverboats and barges. Known for their plush, silver-and-black coats and expressive “spectacle” markings around the eyes, Keeshonden are friendly, intelligent, and exceptionally loyal family dogs.
They thrive on human interaction and are especially known for their affectionate and alert nature. With their cheerful demeanor and minimal prey drive, Keeshonden make great pets for families with children or other animals.
Size Category: Medium
Keeshonden are medium-sized dogs, with males weighing 35–45 lbs and females 30–40 lbs. Their thick coats and sturdy bodies develop quickly, but growth tracking is important to maintain a healthy weight and support strong skeletal development—especially since excess weight can hide beneath their fluffy coats.

How Much Bigger Will My Keeshond Puppy Get?
Keeshond puppies grow rapidly in the first 6 months, then more gradually as they approach adulthood.
- 50% of adult weight by 4 months
- 75% by 6–7 months
- Full adult size by 12–18 months
Rule of thumb:
Double your puppy’s weight at 16 weeks to estimate adult size.
Exceptions:
Some Keeshonden may continue to fill out and gain muscle until around 18 months, though most reach adult height by 12 months.

Keeshond Growth Tips
Nutrition
- Feeding Schedule: Feed 3 meals daily until 6 months, then reduce to 2 meals per day.
- Use a high-quality medium-breed puppy food that supports steady growth and joint health.
- Avoid overfeeding—Keeshonden are prone to obesity, which can be hard to detect beneath their thick coats.
Exercise
- Keeshonden are moderately active and benefit from daily walks and play sessions.
- Puppies should avoid high-impact activities like jumping or climbing stairs until joints are more developed.
- Include mental stimulation such as obedience training and puzzle toys to match their high intelligence.
Health Watch
- Hip dysplasia is a concern—maintain a healthy weight and avoid over-exercising during growth phases.
- Patellar luxation (knee issues) can occur in some individuals—watch for limping or stiffness.
- Thyroid and metabolic issues may arise in adulthood—routine vet checks help catch these early.
