Labrador Retriever Breed Profile & Growth Guide
Breed Overview
The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular and beloved dog breeds in the world. Originating in Newfoundland (not Labrador, despite the name), these dogs were originally used by fishermen to retrieve nets and fish. The breed was later refined in England for fieldwork, particularly retrieving game for hunters. Today, Labradors are known for their friendly temperament, intelligence, and versatility in roles ranging from family pet to service and detection dog.
Labradors are eager to please, gentle with children, and generally easy to train. They thrive in active households and love being involved in family activities. Their sociable nature and love for water make them excellent companions for both work and play.
Size Category: Large
Labradors are considered a large breed, with adult males typically weighing 65–80 lbs and females 55–70 lbs. Due to their rapid growth and tendency toward overeating, growth tracking is important for managing joint health, avoiding obesity, and ensuring skeletal development is balanced.

How Much Bigger Will My Labrador Retriever Puppy Get?
Labradors grow rapidly in the first 6 months and then gradually slow as they near their adult size.
- 50% of adult weight by 4–5 months
- 75% by 6–7 months
- Full adult weight by 12–18 months
Rule of thumb:
Double your Lab puppy’s weight at 16 weeks to estimate their adult size.
Exceptions:
Labs may continue to fill out in muscle and chest size until 18–24 months, especially males.

Labrador Retriever Growth Tips
Nutrition
- Feeding Schedule: Feed 3 meals per day until 6 months old, then reduce to 2 meals daily.
- Use a large-breed puppy food to support steady bone growth and prevent conditions like hip dysplasia.
- Labs are prone to overeating—monitor portions and avoid free-feeding.
Exercise
- Regular, low-impact exercise (e.g., walks, swimming, gentle play) supports healthy joints.
- Avoid intense running or jumping before 12–18 months to reduce joint strain.
- Incorporate mental stimulation such as training and scent games—they are eager learners.
Health Watch
- Hip and elbow dysplasia are common concerns—controlled growth and maintaining a lean weight can help reduce risks.
- Obesity is prevalent in adult Labs, so establish healthy habits early.
- Joint supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin may be beneficial starting in adulthood.
