Sussex Spaniel Breed Overview
The Sussex Spaniel is a rare and distinctive breed that originated in Sussex, England, in the late 18th century. Developed as a slow, steady, and determined hunting companion, the Sussex is known for its rich golden-liver coat, soulful expression, and deep-chested, low-set build. Unlike some spaniels, they have a calmer, more deliberate hunting style, making them excellent for close-range flushing of game. As companions, they are affectionate, loyal, and gentle, though they can be quite vocal with their trademark “hound-like” bark.
Falling into the medium-size category, adult Sussex Spaniels typically weigh 35–45 lbs and stand about 13–15 inches at the shoulder. Growth tracking is especially important for this breed due to their long backs and sturdy bodies, which are prone to joint and spinal stress if they gain too much weight too quickly. Maintaining a healthy growth curve supports joint health and reduces the risk of early-onset orthopedic issues (American Kennel Club).

How Much Bigger Will My Sussex Spaniel Puppy Get?
Most Sussex Spaniels reach 50% of their adult weight by around 5 months. They generally achieve their adult height by 9–10 months, but their bodies continue to fill out in muscle and chest depth until about 14–16 months.
A rule of thumb: Double your puppy’s weight at 16 weeks for a close adult size estimate. While they are a medium breed, they can be slow to mature physically, so it’s normal for them to look slightly “leggy” before filling in.
Sussex Spaniel Growth Tips
Nutrition
- Feed a high-quality medium-breed puppy food until around 12–14 months old.
- Divide meals into 3 portions per day until 6 months, then transition to 2 meals daily.
- Avoid overfeeding, as excess weight can put strain on their long back and joints.
Exercise
- Provide daily walks and light play, but avoid excessive jumping or stair climbing in early growth stages.
- Swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise for building muscle without stressing joints.
Health Watch
- Monitor for hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) due to their long-backed structure.
- Maintain a lean body condition throughout life to reduce orthopedic strain.
- Keep ears clean and dry to prevent infections, as their drooping ears are prone to trapping moisture (Sussex Spaniel Club of America).
