While generally healthy, growth-related concerns for American English Coonhounds include:
Hip dysplasia: Maintain a healthy weight and choose reputable breeders who screen for this condition.
Ear infections: Their long, floppy ears require regular cleaning, especially during teething and growth periods.
Obesity: Monitor calorie intake, especially if your puppy is less active.
Routine vet check-ups, a well-monitored growth chart, and early training help ensure your American English Coonhound puppy grows into a strong, healthy, and well-mannered adult.
American English Coonhounds are highly active scent hounds that require a nutrient-dense, balanced diet to support their stamina and muscle tone. Daily caloric needs vary, but a 60-pound adult typically requires 2 and half to 3 cups of high-quality dry food per day, divided into two meals
American English Coonhounds have a short, firm coat that sheds lightly throughout the year, making them low-maintenance groomers. Regular ear cleaning, monthly showers, and weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or soft brush are crucial for preventing infections. Additionally, they need paw examinations following activity and monthly nail trims.
Coonhounds are highly active but need age-appropriate exercise during growth to avoid joint stress. Start with:
Short walks
Playtime in a secure yard
Basic scent and obedience games
Avoid high-impact activities (like jumping or long runs) until after 12 months when joints are more developed.
About the American English Coonhound
The American English Coonhound is a large scent hound that originated in the United States, with roots tracing back to European settlers during the 17th and 18th centuries. The breed descends from English Foxhounds brought to America by figures including Robert Brooke, Thomas Walker, and even President George Washington. Over time, these dogs were selectively bred to adapt to the rougher American terrain, specifically to track and tree raccoons by night and hunt red fox by day. The United Kennel Club first recognized the breed in 1905 as the English Fox and Coonhound. The American English Coonhound is sometimes crossed with Bloodhounds to improve its ability to track game that has climbed trees, ensuring scent is not lost when prey goes upward.
