Caring for a American Foxhound

Health

A generally healthy, hardy breed with few major predispositions; hip dysplasia and ear infections (given the long, floppy ears) can occur.

Nutrition

A quality diet matched to this breed's genuinely high activity level.

Grooming

The short, hard coat needs minimal brushing.

Training

American Foxhounds need 1-2 hours of daily exercise or they can become destructive — this scent-driven breed also needs secure fencing given a strong prey drive toward small animals.

About the breed

One of America's oldest native breeds, developed from English hounds brought over in the 1650s and later refined by George Washington, who's credited by the AKC as "the Father of the American Foxhound." It's the official state dog of Virginia.

Sweet-natured and good with kids, dogs, and even cats, American Foxhounds were bred for stamina-heavy fox hunting, and that energy needs a real outlet in a companion home.
