Hip dysplasia, a condition where the hip joint does not develop properly and can lead to arthritis, is known to occur in the breed .
Addison's disease, a condition caused by abnormally low production of hormones by the adrenal glands, is another concern .
Some Beardies may also develop progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), a genetic eye condition that can lead to blindness, as well as immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia, where the immune system destroys its own red blood cells
Choose a high-quality puppy food appropriate for medium-sized, active breeds.
Feed three to four small meals per day from weaning until about six months of age, then reduce to two meals per day.
Bearded Collies are naturally lean and active, and you should be able to feel your puppy's ribs easily with light pressure.
Avoid overfeeding, as excess weight puts unnecessary stress on developing joints and can lead to obesity-related health problems.
Grooming a Bearded Collie puppy requires a significant commitment of time and attention.
Their coat is a long double coat with a soft undercoat and a harsh, shaggy outer coat.
Brushing is required at least two to three times per week to prevent painful mats and tangles, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar area.
Start grooming sessions early so your puppy learns to stand calmly and accept being brushed. Bathing is only necessary every four to six weeks or when the puppy becomes visibly dirty
This breed is exceptionally intelligent, eager to learn, and highly trainable, but they are also energetic and independent-minded .
Use short, positive training sessions with high-value treats and plenty of praise.
Harsh words or heavy corrections are not recommended, as they will damage your puppy's trust and willingness to work.
Socialisation is absolutely essential for a Bearded Collie puppy. Introduce them calmly to a wide variety of people, considerate children, other friendly dogs, and different environments before they reach four months of age.
Bearded Collies have a strong herding instinct and may try to herd family members, including children, so early training on appropriate behaviour is helpful
The Bearded Collie, affectionately known as the “Beardie,” is a medium-sized, agile, and energetic herding breed that originated in Scotland . Legend holds that the breed’s ancestors were Polish Lowland Sheepdogs brought to Scotland by a merchant in the 16th century, where they were bred with local Scottish dogs to produce the Bearded Collie we know today . The name comes from the long hair, or “beard,” under the chin . In terms of size category, the Bearded Collie falls into the medium range. Adults typically stand between 51 and 56 centimetres (20 to 22 inches) at the shoulder and weigh between 40 to 60 pounds. As a puppy, Beardies grow steadily and generally reach their full adult size by approximately twelve to fourteen months of age.
