Caring for a Belgian Laekenois

Health

Prone to hip dysplasia given the athletic demands of herding work; otherwise generally healthy like its Belgian Shepherd relatives.

Nutrition

A quality diet matched to this breed's high working-dog energy level.

Grooming

The wiry coat needs regular brushing, more during seasonal shedding.

Training

Highly intelligent and needs a real job — sensitive to harsh correction, so positive reinforcement works best, and this breed can become destructive if left alone and understimulated.

About the breed

The oldest and rarest of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties, named for the town of Laeken near Brussels, historically used to herd and guard sheep as well as guard valuable linen drying at Belgian royal estates. Served as a messenger dog in both World Wars — a Hitler-era bounty on the breed in WWII significantly cut its numbers. The AKC recognized it fully in 2020.

Distinguished from its Malinois, Sheepdog, and Tervuren relatives mainly by a rough, wiry fawn coat, the Laekenois shares the same alert, loyal, protective temperament common to all four Belgian varieties.
