Caring for a Belgian Malinois

Health

Generally a healthy breed, but predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia given the athletic demands placed on the joints. Regular OFA hip/elbow screening is standard practice among reputable breeders.

Nutrition

A high-energy diet matched to genuinely serious activity levels — this is a breed that in working roles may need aerobic exercise equivalent to a five-mile run daily, and food should scale accordingly.

Grooming

The short double coat needs just weekly brushing — low-maintenance despite the demanding exercise needs.

Training

This is not a low-key companion breed — Malinois need a real job (obedience, agility, tracking, or working roles) and serious daily exercise, or that drive turns into destructive or anxious behavior. Best suited to experienced owners ready for a genuinely demanding dog.

About the breed

The Belgian Malinois was developed near the city of Malines (Mechelen) in Belgium as a herding dog, one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherd distinguished mainly by coat. Their intelligence and drive led them well beyond herding into police work, military service, and detection work, where the breed has become a global standard.

The AKC standard describes a dog with "exceedingly proud carriage," strong, agile, and alert — Malinois are bred for an intense working partnership with a handler, and the standard explicitly reflects that this is a serious working breed, not a casual companion choice.
