Caring for a Bergamasco Sheepdog

Health

A generally healthy, hardy breed with few major predispositions — one of the breed's real selling points.

Nutrition

A quality diet in measured portions; no unusual dietary requirements.

Grooming

Despite the dramatic "flocked" mats, the coat is actually low-maintenance once formed correctly in puppyhood — occasional separating of the mats by hand, no regular brushing (which would damage the felted structure).

Training

Eager to please and genuinely smart, Bergamascos respond well to consistent, positive training and thrive with a real job to do.

About the breed

An ancient Italian herding breed from the Alpine Bergamo region, with a history tracing back over two millennia, developed to herd and guard sheep and cattle in harsh mountain weather — the breed's signature matted, felted coat is a functional adaptation, not a grooming choice.

Robustly healthy and low-maintenance despite the dramatic coat, Bergamascos are known for genuine intelligence, patient devotion to work, and a protective but generally easygoing temperament with kids and other animals.
