Due to their small starting population, Kooikerhondjes are prone to a number of genetic disorders. The Kooikerhondje is susceptible to a number of canine illnesses even when proper breeding techniques are used.
To increase genetic diversity within the small gene pool, it is advised to use appropriate breeding techniques to lower the coefficients of inbreeding.
Serious illnesses in the Kooikerhondje are decreased by appropriate breeding methods and knowledge of the genetic lines of disease within the breed. T
The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje should thrive on premium dog food, whether it is cooked at home under the guidance and consent of your veterinarian or is produced commercially.
Any diet should be suitable for the dog's age (adult, elderly, or puppy). Keep an eye on your dog's weight and calorie intake because certain dogs are prone to becoming overweight.
Find out which human foods are safe for dogs and which aren't. If you are worried about your dog's nutrition or weight, consult your veterinarian. There should always be fresh, clean water available.
The occasional bath will keep the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje clean and looking his best in addition to routine weekly care.
To prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking, the robust, quickly developing nails should be routinely cut with a nail clipper or grinder.
Regular ear examinations are necessary to prevent wax and debris accumulation, which can lead to infection. Regular brushing of the teeth is recommended.
Use positive reinforcement methods with small, tasty treats and praise, as this sensitive breed does not respond well to harsh corrections or a "firm hand." Instead, provide clear, consistent rules and leadership.
House training is usually straightforward with a consistent schedule and crate training.
Puppy classes are strongly recommended starting at around nine weeks of age, as they help you learn to read your dog's body language and allow your puppy to interact safely with other dogs.
About the Kooikerhondje
The breed’s name means “small cage dog” in Dutch, referring to its historical work in duck decoys. These dogs were trained to lure ducks into long, narrow traps called “eendenkooien.” Paintings by Dutch masters such as Jan Steen from the 17th century show dogs remarkably similar to today’s Kooikerhondje. The breed nearly became extinct in the early 20th century, but Baroness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol worked to preserve it in the 1940s.
The founding mother of the modern breed was a bitch named “Tommie” from Friesland, and the first litter was bred in 1942. Today, the Kooikerhondje remains a rare but beloved companion and hunting dog.
