Maltese are prone to luxating patella (a slipping kneecap common in small breeds), portosystemic liver shunt (more common in this breed than many others), and dental disease — crowded toy-breed jaws mean significant dental disease can appear by age 3-4 without regular care. Patent ductus arteriosus, a congenital heart defect, also occurs at elevated rates in the breed.
