Samoyed Breed Overview
The Samoyed, affectionately known as the “Sammy,” originated in Siberia, where they were bred by the nomadic Samoyede people to herd reindeer, pull sleds, and keep their humans warm in the harsh Arctic climate. Recognized for their iconic “Sammy smile,” dense white coat, and affectionate temperament, Samoyeds are intelligent, social, and thrive when part of an active family.
Samoyeds are considered a large breed, with adult males weighing significantly more than females. Because they are an active, working breed that grows quickly in the first year, tracking their growth is essential to ensure proper bone, joint, and muscle development. Overfeeding or improper exercise during puppyhood can lead to long-term orthopedic issues.
For further breed details, see the American Kennel Club Samoyed profile or the Samoyed Club of America.

How Much Bigger Will My Samoyed Puppy Get?
Most Samoyed puppies reach 50% of their adult weight by 5–6 months and their full height by around 10 months. However, they will continue to fill out and gain muscle until 18–24 months.
A quick rule of thumb: Double your puppy’s weight at 16 weeks to estimate their adult size. For example, a 20 lb Samoyed at 4 months may reach about 40 lbs as an adult (with males tending toward the higher end of the range).
Note: Unlike giant breeds, Samoyeds don’t take more than two years to grow, but they do mature more slowly than small breeds, so patience is key during the “gangly” adolescent stage.
Samoyed Growth Tips
Nutrition
- Feed a high-quality large-breed puppy formula until 12–18 months to promote steady bone and joint growth.
- Provide 3 meals daily until 6 months, then transition to 2 meals per day.
- Avoid rapid weight gain—extra pounds can stress growing joints.
Exercise
- Give short, gentle walks and supervised play in a fenced yard during early months.
- Avoid intense running, jumping, or pulling activities before 12–18 months to prevent joint strain.
- Include mental stimulation such as basic obedience, puzzle toys, and scent games.
Health Watch
- Monitor for hip dysplasia and other joint concerns common in large breeds.
- Watch coat condition—poor nutrition may affect their thick double coat.
- Schedule regular vet visits during the first year for growth tracking and early detection of developmental issues.
