Caring for a Tosa

Health

Prone to hip and elbow dysplasia given the breed's massive size; as a deep-chested breed, bloat risk also applies.

Nutrition

A large-breed puppy formula through the (notably slow) growth period; adults do well on a quality diet with careful portion control.

Grooming

The short coat needs minimal brushing.

Training

Requires an experienced, confident handler and rigorous early socialization given the breed's size, strength, and guarding history — genuinely not a breed for a first-time or casual owner, and restricted or banned in some jurisdictions.

About the breed

A Japanese Molosser-type breed developed in Tosa (present-day Kochi Prefecture), historically bred for a now-banned fighting tradition, combining Japanese and Western mastiff-type bloodlines.

Patient, composed, and courageous, Tosas are calm guardians that carry genuine physical power and require a very experienced, confident handler.
