Caring for a Vizsla

Health

Vizslas are prone to idiopathic epilepsy, which in this breed is believed to have a genetic, inherited basis and most often appears between 6 months and 3 years of age. They're also predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and — being deep-chested — carry bloat risk.

Nutrition

Feed a high-quality diet appropriate to this breed's genuinely high energy level; because of bloat risk, split meals into two or more smaller portions rather than one large feeding.

Grooming

The short, smooth coat needs minimal grooming — an easy-care breed overall, though dental care deserves attention given documented above-average rates of periodontal disease.

Training

Vizslas need substantial daily exercise and close companionship — this breed doesn't do well left alone for long periods and is genuinely prone to separation anxiety. Positive-reinforcement training suits their sensitive temperament well.

About the breed

The Vizsla is Hungary's national gundog, developed by Magyar hunters to point, track, and retrieve on both land and water — a genuinely all-purpose sporting breed with centuries of history in Hungarian hunting culture, formally recognized by the AKC in 1960.

Vizslas are known as intensely people-oriented dogs — often called "velcro dogs" for how closely they bond and stay near their owners — combining real field drive with a famously affectionate, sensitive temperament at home.
