What's it like
Caring for a Puli

Hip dysplasia, a condition affecting the hip joint, is known to occur in the breed, so responsible breeders should provide hip scoring results .
Some Puli may also develop degenerative myelopathy, a progressive spinal condition that appears in older dogs .
Hereditary eye disorders are another concern, making eye testing of breeding dogs very important .
For your Puli puppy, it is essential to ask the breeder for relevant health clearances, including hip scores and eye examination certificates.

Choose foods with the correct balance of protein and fat for their active metabolism.
Feed three measured meals per day from weaning until about six months of age, then reduce to two meals per day.
Puli are naturally lean and should never appear overweight. You should be able to feel your puppy's ribs easily with light pressure, and they should have a visible waist when viewed from above.

Puli's distinctive corded coat, which naturally develops dreadlocks, demands a lot of consistent care to maintain. They require daily to weekly maintenance to keep cords apart and avoid matting, but they do not shed. Because cords might retain water, produce skin problems, or develop odors, special bathing (every three to six weeks) and very thorough drying are essential.

Provide daily play sessions, short walks, and mental stimulation like herding-style games.
Avoid intense jumping or overexertion before 12 months to protect developing joints.
Pulis excel at agility, but formal training should wait until growth plates close.

The Puli is a medium-sized, agile, and distinctive herding breed that originated in Hungary . The breed’s ancestors were brought to the Carpathian Basin by the Magyars over one thousand years ago, where they were developed as loyal companions and hardworking sheepdogs for Hungarian shepherds . In terms of size category, the Puli falls into the medium range . An adult typically stands between 14 and 18 inches at the shoulder and weighs between 20 and 35 pounds, with males being slightly larger than females . As a puppy, Pulik are born with a soft, wavy coat rather than the signature cords. They grow steadily and generally reach their full adult height by approximately twelve months of age, though the coat continues to develop for several years.
