Canaan Dogs are generally healthy breed. However, they can be genetically predisposed to certain health conditions. The primary issues to monitor include joint problems like hip dysplasia, patella luxation, elbow dysplasia, eye disorders and specific autoimmune conditions like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): A genetic disease causing the retina to deteriorate, which eventually leads to night blindness and overall vision loss.
Hypothyroidism: An underactive thyroid gland that can result in weight gain, lethargy, and coat issues.
Feed your puppy a high-quality, medium-breed puppy formula to support bone and muscle development. Offer meals three times a day until 6 months old, then reduce to twice daily. Avoid overfeeding, as excess weight can lead to joint problems.
A weekly brushing is usually sufficient to control shedding and get rid of dirt from the rough, straight double coat of a Canaan dog. Although they lose a lot (or "blow" their coat) once or twice a year and need daily brushing during those times, they are normally clean dogs who rarely require baths.
Canaan Dogs are highly intelligent and independent, making them eager learners but easily bored with repetitive tasks. To train them effectively, rely on short, fun positive reinforcement sessionsโutilize tools like clickers, and pair verbal markers with treats to guide their behavior.
The Canaan Dog is one of the oldest known dog breeds, with roots tracing back thousands of years to the Middle East, particularly Israel. Originally used as herding and guard dogs by nomadic desert peoples, Canaan Dogs are intelligent, alert, and highly adaptable. They are known for their independence, strong survival instincts, and loyalty to their families, though they can be reserved with strangers.
Canaan Dogs fall into the medium-sized breed category, typically weighing between 35 and 55 pounds as adults. Because they are a natural breed with minimal artificial selection, individual growth rates can vary, making it important to monitor weight and development closely during puppyhood.
