Maintaining the health and happiness of your Coton de Tulear requires a balanced and nourishing diet. Unless a veterinarian instructs you otherwise, feed them twice a day premium dog food designed for tiny breeds. Their age, weight, and degree of activity will all affect how much food is advised. Coton de Tulears are prone to weight growth, so it's crucial to avoid overfeeding.
Puppies should be fed small breed puppy food three to four times a day until they are 10 to 12 months old, or as recommended by your pet food supplier and/or veterinarian. At six months, this should be reduced to twice a day.
Coton de Tulears are available in tricolor, black and white, and white, among other colors. To keep their unique coat looking beautiful, they need to be groomed on a regular basis. Although their cotton-like fur doesn't shed a lot, it's crucial to brush their coat many times a week to keep it tangle-free and avoid matting. They also need to visit a professional groomer on a frequent basis to maintain their best appearance and take regular baths to keep their coat fresh and clean.
Training Coton de Tulears is quite enjoyable because they are intelligent and ready to please. Positive reinforcement techniques, like as playing, praise, and treats, work well with them. To keep their interest and avoid boredom, make the training sessions brief, entertaining, and interesting.
To help them develop into well-mannered and self-assured canines, early socialization and basic obedience training should begin at an early age. The secret to training this breed successfully is to be patient, consistent, and compassionate.
About the Coton de Tulear
Known as the “Royal Dog of Madagascar,” the Coton de Tulear (pronounced KO-Tone dih TOO-lay-ARE) is a fiercely loyal, charming companion dog named for its distinctive, cotton-like coat and its historic city of origin, Tulear.
Legend has it that the breed’s ancestors survived a shipwreck off the coast of Madagascar, swimming ashore and eventually mating with local terriers. Today, they are beloved worldwide for their sweet nature and allergy-friendly coats.
Temperament and Personality
Cotons are bred for one primary purpose: companionship. They form incredibly tight bonds with their families and are notorious for shadowing their owners from room to room.
-
Playful & Clownish: They are naturally entertaining and often “talk” to their owners using a unique repertoire of grunts, vocalizations, and growls. Many Cotons also love to dance or walk on their hind legs when excited.
-
Sturdy but Sweet: Unlike some delicate toy breeds, Cotons are physically robust and generally get along beautifully with respectful children and other household pets.
-
Prone to Separation Anxiety: Because they thrive on constant human contact, they are not the best fit for households where they will be left alone for long, daily stretches.
