Shetland Sheepdogs are generally healthy and live 12 to 14 years, but they are predisposed to specific genetic conditions. Key concerns include eye diseases (like Collie Eye Anomaly), MDR1 gene mutation (drug sensitivity), joint issues (hip dysplasia), hypothyroidism, and gallbladder disease.
Shelties thrive on high-protein, moderate-fat diets with quality omega fatty acids to fuel their high energy and maintain a glossy double coat. Because they are active but small, they require nutrient-dense meals. An adult Sheltie typically needs about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of high-quality food daily.
Shelties (Shetland Sheepdogs) require regular brushing 3 to 4 times a week to maintain their lush, double coats. Routine maintenance involves line brushing down to the skin, trimming the paw pads and edges of the feet, cleaning the ears, and deshedding when their seasonal coat "blows"
Shelties are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please, making them generally quick to learn. They thrive on positive reinforcement and precise commands, but their strong herding instincts and vocal nature require consistent boundaries, early socialization, and structured mental stimulation to prevent unwanted habits
About the Shetland Sheepdog
The Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately known as the Sheltie, is a small, intelligent, and graceful herding breed that originated in the Shetland Islands of Scotland . For centuries, these hardy dogs were developed by island farmers to work sheep, cattle, and ponies in harsh, windswept conditions . The breed was originally called the Shetland Collie, but the name was formally changed due to objections from Rough Collie breeders . In terms of size category, the Sheltie falls into the small to medium range. Adults typically stand between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 15 and 25 pounds . As a puppy, Shelties are born small and delicate, weighing only a few ounces. They grow steadily and generally reach their full adult size by twelve to fourteen months of age.
